OLPC activities The work we made for our presentation regarding OLPCat the ITI Majorana school, was a good opportunity to think more carefully about our expectations from a laptop, distinguing the needed functions from the optional ones.

As I tried to explain during my presentation, I think that it is impossible to compare OLPC with other PC starting from weight or cost, or the reply time, as behind OLPC there are question related to the environment in which the OLPC are expected to be used (as sand protection, wather, crash, reduced consumption) and to the final user, the children. Thinking to them, they designed a totally new interface, that do not use the office and the desktop metaphor, and for this reason we don’t have “folders” with “files” to be archived.

They started from the concept of journal, in which everything is sequentally archived and put somewhere on the pc memory..
we grown up using commands like “dir” or “ls”, and also if after we were trained to forget the concept of “fat” (file allocation table) and we aren’t allowed to see “the system files”, as we are considered bungles, we feel deeply puzzled. We try to have an open mind approach, but I feel very difficult to judge if this new metaphor is better than we one we used before.

The need of evolving from the office metaphor, is more and more urgent as PC now are used in context we cannot imagine 10 or 15 years ago. Maybe thanks to the web 2.0 buzz, who lead so many not expert to use the PC for pleasure or need, I was very happy to hear about announcement of “ITSME” at the Innovation forum 2008. After many years of “standardization” (that has also many positiive aspects) and the (maybe?) the flattening of the GNU-Linux capability, we are now discussing again about interfaces and metaphors.. we are no more talking about files and folders but about “stories” and “places” and complexity of the human nature. I dont’ know if this is postmodernism, but for sure, it is closer to the way we work and think, today.
